Lawnmower Blenny — Salarias fasciatus
Lawnmower Blenny — A reef grazer with character
Salarias fasciatus, also known as the Sailfin Algae Blenny or Jeweled Blenny, adds personality to a marine aquarium. Its mottled pattern helps it blend into rockwork while its expressive face and perching behavior make it easy to enjoy.
François Neo’s recommendation
Choose this fish because you want to keep it long term, with a feeding plan that continues after visible algae decline. I recommend a mature aquarium with plenty of grazing surfaces, and checking regularly that the fish maintains good body condition.
Care at a glance
- Scientific name: Salarias fasciatus
- Other names: Sailfin Algae Blenny, Jeweled Blenny
- Adult size: approximately 5–5.5 inches
- Aquarium: 30 gallons minimum, well established with ample rockwork
- Temperament: can be territorial with other blennies and similarly shaped fish
- Housing: provide shelters, perches and a secure lid
- Reef compatibility: generally suitable, but monitor corals and clam mantles for picking, particularly if feeding is inadequate
Feeding
Provide natural grazing surfaces and supplement with algae-based marine foods, nori and suitable herbivore preparations. Some individuals accept frozen foods as well. Check actual food intake: the presence of algae does not guarantee enough suitable food.
Compatibility and planning
One per aquarium is the safest starting point. Plan carefully before mixing with other blennies, and avoid combinations with delicate seahorses or pipefish. Its grazing can help, but algae control still requires attention to nutrients and regular aquarium care.
Sizes and availability
Available in S, M and L at $39 per fish. Size categories are approximate and depend on the specimens received; contact us for a measured size. Markings vary naturally and the image is representative.
