Scooter Blenny — Synchiropus ocellatus
Scooter Blenny — A fascinating little reef hunter
Commonly called the Scooter Blenny, Synchiropus ocellatus belongs to the dragonet family, Callionymidae. Its mottled pattern, expressive eyes and deliberate movements make it a captivating resident as it searches the sand and rockwork for tiny prey.
François Neo’s recommendation — Flatworm control
In my experience, Scooter Dragonets can be very, very effective at reducing nuisance flatworms. Their patient hunting behavior makes them an interesting option for a suitable, established reef.
This is my practical observation: results depend on the individual fish and the species of flatworm. Complete eradication is not guaranteed. Choose this fish only if you can meet its ongoing feeding needs, including after the flatworm population declines.
Care at a glance
- Family: Callionymidae — dragonets.
- Scientific name: Synchiropus ocellatus.
- Experience: Advanced feeding care, especially for wild-caught specimens.
- Our recommendation: A mature reef of 55 US gallons or larger, with abundant small live prey and an ongoing feeding plan. Volume alone does not ensure enough food.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful; avoid aggressive fish and strong competition for small live foods.
- Reef compatibility: Generally suitable with corals; naturally preys on small organisms living on the substrate.
- Habitat: Provide accessible rockwork and sandy foraging areas.
Feeding comes first
Maintain a reliable supply of copepods and other appropriate small live foods. Target-feed suitable fine frozen foods when accepted, and watch the fish eat rather than assuming it receives enough. Pellet acceptance varies; do not assume a wild-caught fish feeds like a conditioned captive-bred specimen.
Check body condition regularly. A fish that is constantly hunting may still be underfed. Plan supplemental feeding before purchase and reassess competition from other pod-eating fish.
