Solorensis Fairy Wrasse — Red-Eye
Solorensis Fairy Wrasse — A splash of color in motion
Known in the aquarium trade as the Solorensis or Red-Eye Fairy Wrasse, this colorful fish brings blue tones, a warm orange-yellow head and lively swimming behavior to an established marine aquarium. Colors vary with sex, maturity and mood.
François Neo’s advice
My recommendation: plan your wrasse community before adding this fish. Give it open swimming space, sheltered rockwork and a calm introduction. A secure lid is essential from day one. When mixing wrasses, an acclimation box can help you observe the residents’ reaction before release.
Care at a glance
- Identification: The pictured Red-Eye trade form is consistent with Cirrhilabrus aquamarinus, historically sold as C. solorensis. Confirm supplier identification and collection locality for the actual specimen.
- Adult size: Plan for a fish approaching 5 inches (12 cm).
- Our aquarium recommendation: 75 US gallons or larger, with ample swimming room and rock crevices for shelter.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful with community fish; may become territorial toward other wrasses, particularly similar males.
- Reef compatibility: Generally suitable with corals. Exercise caution with very small crustaceans.
- Diet: Small marine meaty foods, including mysis, with appropriately sized prepared foods once accepted.
- Essential equipment: A tightly fitted lid with protected gaps around plumbing and cables.
Feeding & settling in
Offer small meals at least twice daily and observe feeding response. Vary the diet and make sure established fish do not monopolize food. Provide sheltered resting places and monitor interactions after introduction.
