Starry Blenny — Salarias ramosus
Starry Blenny — Big personality, tiny white stars
With a dark, mottled body covered in pale spots and little branching tufts above its eyes, Salarias ramosus brings character to a marine aquarium. Watch it settle onto a favorite rock, survey the reef, then hop to its next grazing spot.
François Neo’s recommendation
I recommend choosing this fish for its personality as much as its grazing behavior. Give it a mature aquarium with plenty of rock surfaces, and make sure it is eating well. Algae grazing is useful, but it should never replace a proper feeding plan.
Care at a glance
- Scientific name: Salarias ramosus
- Family: Blenniidae
- Adult size: approximately 5.5–6 inches
- Aquarium: established, 30 gallons minimum; more space offers additional grazing territory
- Temperament: generally peaceful with other fish; can defend its space against other blennies or similarly shaped fish
- Reef compatibility: generally suitable for reef aquariums
- Housing: rockwork with shelters, resting places and natural grazing surfaces; a secure lid is essential
Feeding
Provide algae-based marine foods, spirulina preparations and suitable herbivore foods alongside natural grazing. Confirm that your individual accepts the foods offered, and monitor body condition. Do not assume that a clean-looking aquarium can supply enough food indefinitely.
Compatibility
One Starry Blenny per aquarium is the safest starting point. Additional blennies need careful planning and generous territory. Avoid tankmates that will constantly harass it or prevent it from feeding.
Sizes and availability
